Know your limits.
Claude Code and Codex usage, always in your Mac's menu bar. Because the agent stopping mid-refactor is a bad way to check.
brew install morox-ai/tap/cc-limits
Quiet until it matters.
Below 60% the bars match your menu bar and ask for nothing. Past 60% they go amber. Past 80%, red. Try it.
That's the entire alert system. No notifications, no sounds, no badge count.
func warningColor(for utilization: Double) -> NSColor? {if utilization > 80 { return redColor }if utilization > 60 { return amberColor }return nil}
It already has what it needs.
No account, no API key, no settings window. If you're signed in to Claude Code or Codex, you're done.
| Tool | Reads its token from | Asks for usage at |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | macOS keychain, Claude Code-credentials | api.anthropic.com |
| Codex | ~/.codex/auth.json | chatgpt.com |
Those are the only two network calls it makes. No analytics, no server of its own.
It touches your credentials, so read it first. One Swift file, about 550 lines, no dependencies. Read main.swift
Two commands.
One to install, one to keep it running after every login.
Install
brew install morox-ai/tap/cc-limits
Start it, now and at every login
brew services start cc-limits
Needs up-to-date Xcode Command Line Tools. On first launch macOS asks for keychain access: choose Always Allow. For Codex, sign in with codex login using a ChatGPT account.
Good to know.
- Why is there a dim ∞ in my menu bar?
- That provider hasn't loaded yet. Usually you're signed out or macOS is still waiting on keychain permission. To fix the second one, run
brew services stop cc-limits, thencc-limits, choose Always Allow, quit from the menu and start the service again. - Does it work with an API key?
- No. It reads subscription limits, so Claude Code needs its normal login and Codex needs a ChatGPT login. API keys get invoices instead.
- How fresh are the numbers?
- It asks every 5 minutes. Refresh now in the menu, or ⌘R while it's open, asks immediately.
- Why build from source instead of a download?
- You run the code you can read, and Gatekeeper has nothing to quarantine. Homebrew does the compiling.
- Is this official?
- Not even slightly. It's an independent project built on usage endpoints that aren't publicly documented, so an update on their side can break it.
Stop finding out the hard way.
